Materials Required

Computer with Windows Operating System.

Prior knowledge

Students should know about the 'This PC' icon, Task Manager and basic internet usage.

Students should know options such as Minimize, Maximize and Task Manager.

  • What is an Operating System (OS)? Give some examples of operating systems. Are mobile phones also computers?
  • Exercise:2



  • How does the Operating System (OS) control all the devices and applications? Open the following applications and find the CPU usage and how much memory is utilised for all these applications - Open Office, Windows Explorer, Google Chrome.

  • What is the Clipboard? Explain its purpose and use.

  • Change the desktop background picture, change the default size of ‘Apps' icons and text.

    1. Teachers should explain the difference between open-source and proprietary operating systems.
    2. Teachers should ensure that students open more than one application at the same time.
    3. Teachers should show the folders and apps available on mobile phones and help students understand that mobile phones are also computers.
    4. Teachers should teach how to open the ‘Task Manager’ window. (Ctrl+Alt+ Del or Ctrl+Shift+Esc or Right click on the task bar and select the ‘Task Manager’ window).
